She no longer plays around with David, she merely watches and denies being different. She wanted to be perfect, she wanted to fit in.

This is why she does not talk to David at school. The quote means that watching Amy disappear from his life really upset and hurt him, and he knows that she will never again be the person she once was, for she had changed to be like everyone else.

Unlike Amy, David has distinct charactersics. He is comfortable with himself and is quite proud of his own personal accomplishments.

These differences in personality and interest allow both Amy and David to find what it is they are looking to find when it comes to school, relationships, and friendships. But as school starts again, Amy changes. David is a bright, creative, studious person.

Kretschmer makes David stand for individualism, while Amy stands for conforming.

As Amy grows up she is molded by the kinds of influences a stereotypical high school experience has to offer. Much of the short story is rembrance of past memories David shared with Amy, and how she changed over the different summers.
